All you need to know about Movember 2019’s top moustache trends
It’s November, which means for the next 30 days, people around the world are growing moustaches in aid of Movember 2019.The charity behind the annual awareness month has one aim - to stop men dying too young. And they are raising funds to tackle men’s health issues including prostate cancer and mental health. With over five million people growing moustaches so far, why not get your barber shop involved as well.
Educator and expert barber Mike Taylorsays, “Movember is a great event and there are lots of ways to get take part.”
How to get involved in Movember
Sign up on the Movember charitywebsite for more information about how your barber shop can take part. Mike says, “A business in your local community might already be holding a Movember event that you can join. For example, your local skateboard shop might be having a Movember evening at the start of the month where people come along to have their faces shaved. Then there’s a ‘shave off’ at the end of the month so you could be one of the barbers involved in that.”
Other options could be a charity challenge that you and your team take part in, or you could host your own Movember event.
“When you’re cutting the moustache it’s better to cut scissor-over-comb so you can be very precise”
The top moustache trend for 2019
The next step is to encourage your clients to take part in Movember. If your customer is growing a moustache for the first time, keep them on trend with the most popular moustache style this year…
“From shoots and shows I’ve been to recently, the fashion is definitely for an Eighties-style Freddie Mercury moustache” says Mike. “It’s really easy to style. The barber needs to trim it all into shape and, to style, just put a tiny bit of waxon just to pat it into place so it’s not lifting or fluffy. The wax also adds a bit of shine to it.
“For Movember, the main thing is to have some fun with it - they could even try the trucker moustache which comes right down to the chin.” Find more moustache inspiration

- 1. First step is actually growing a moustache. Mike says, “Advise your client to grow their moustache a bit longer than they actually want it. Then when they come to you, you can trim any loose hairs and shape it all in with a razor. When you’re cutting the moustache it’s better to cut scissor-over-comb so you can be very precise. Clippers can be a bit strong - when you’re sculpting a moustache you need to be very careful.”
- 2. Recommend your client comes in for weekly moustache trims. “A moustache will grow at different rates so you’ll have some thicker areas and some sparse areas. Having it trimmed weekly will make it a lot easier to keep the perfect shape.”
- 3. Styling is key! “Use a little bit of moustache wax to keep the moustache in place. Make sure you use a pea sized bit of wax, warm it between two fingers first so you don’t get any clumps and then apply it to the moustache evenly. Tell your clients to wash the wax out of their moustache at night so they don’t get a massive build-up of it, and then reapply in the morning.”
