Maria Nila is more than simply haircare

Maria Nila is more than simply haircare

Maria Nila has been passionate about providing 100% vegan, sustainable and cruelty-free haircare since the very beginning. From its production being powered by solar panels to reforesting the equivalent of 34 football fields, they’ve shown these values are in their very DNA. They have also helped grow a community of hairdressers, salons, ambassadors and customers who also want to make a difference for both the planet and our animals.

This philosophy doesn’t stop with their products. Charity is another one of Maria Nila’s ways to achieve a friendlier planet, and this is why they launched their annual Friendly Year. It’s time to discover the story behind it, what the goals are for 2022 and the steps Maria Nila are taking to achieve them.

What is Maria Nila’s Friendly Year?

November 1st is the start of Maria Nila’s Friendly Year, and this also falls on World Vegan Day. It consists of a large charity campaign to highlight a specially chosen endangered animal. With the help of their long-term charity partner, The Perfect World Foundation, they raise money and support a variety of wildlife organisations and projects. The previous years have included:

  • 2017: Save the Elephants | Elephants Alive
  • 2018: Save the Manta Rays | Manta Trust
  • 2019 : Anti-poaching | Black Mambas
  • 2020: Save the Rhinos | Care For Wild
  • 2021: Save the Belugas | Beluga Whale Sanctuary

What is Maria Nila doing for Friendly Year 2022?

This year Maria Nila is putting a spotlight on our favourite tree-dwellers, the sloths. Slow movers living in a fast-paced world, the deforestation happening in tropical rainforests is causing their natural habitats and food to be destroyed at alarming rates. This means that sloths are becoming easy prey for other animals and poachers, as well as being sold for tourist attractions and used for photographs. This can cause excessive stress and lead to premature death.

The sloth population depends on the health of tropical rainforests, and both are dropping rapidly in Costa Rica. Together with The Perfect World Foundation, Maria Nila is contributing to The Sloth Institute of Costa Rica, whose goal is to enhance the welfare and conservation for sloths.

Meet the sloths

As Maria Nila takes steps to help sloths throughout 2022, they are also following two furry friends on their journey back to freedom, Gordita and Gorgie.

Named after her large appetite and love for food, Gordita is a two-fingered sloth who was found alone at only two months old. She needed major surgery in her left arm due to a severely infected tick bite. Gorgie is a three-fingered sloth who was rescued at only a few of days old. Found dehydrated and underweight, her journey back to freedom began from day one by being fed the exact same leaves that she will find in the wild, and also by encouraging her to practice her climbing skills.
