How does Olaplex work?
Broken bonds within the hair are the result of damage from a wide range of sources including heat, chemical, mechanical and environmental. Olaplex works by repairing broken bonds within the hair shaft using a single patented ingredient, Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate.
This single molecule repairs the hair by finding single sulphur hydrogen bonds and cross-linking them back together to form disulphide bonds, restoring the hair’s internal structure for improved resilience, shine, and overall health across all hair types.
How is Olaplex different from normal conditioners?
Unlike traditional conditioners that smooth the surface, Olaplex rebuilds hair from within by repairing and strengthening its internal structure at a molecular level.
Rather than simply coating the hair shaft, Olaplex works to repair and rebuild broken disulfide bonds deep inside the hair, repairing it from the inside out. What types of damage does Olaplex repair?
Bleach
Bleach dissolves the melanin (pigment) in the hair which dramatically weakens and degrades the hair's essential protein (keratin) bonds. This is the most severe damage, resulting in hair that is spongy, highly porous and prone to extreme breakage.
Chemical
Damage from perms, relaxers or permanent straightening. Strong alkaline agents permanently alter the hair's disulfide bonds. The result is a severely compromised internal structure, often showing as snapping, frizz, and a brittle, straw-like texture.
Heat
High-temperature styling tools (flat irons, curling wands, blow dryers) vaporize the water inside the hair shaft, creating tiny air gaps or 'bubbles’. This leads to surface cracking, loss of elasticity, and dry, rigid ends that break easily.
Mechanical
Damage caused by daily physical friction including brushing, towel drying, or tight hairstyles. This constant stress chips away at the protective cuticle, leading to snags, split ends and visible breakage.
Environmental
Daily exposure to UV rays, pollution, and harsh water strips the hair's protective lipid layer. This damage accelerates colour fade, makes the hair dull and rough, and leaves the cortex vulnerable to deeper, long-term stress.
