Paul Mitchell has committed to reducing virgin plastic by transitioning its packaging to post-consumer recycled plastic starting with the Tea Tree and Paul Mitchell lines by 2025. This will reduce their use of virgin, petroleum-based plastic by an estimated 773 tons annually. Reusing existing plastic instead of creating new will have significant environmental benefits for the planet such as, reducing fossil fuel use by 41%, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 1162 metric tons of CO2 and reducing water use by 156 million gallons. The Paul Mitchell Clean Beauty eco-friendly haircare line is made with bio-plastic packaging that is derived from sustainable, harvested Brazilian sugarcane and 100% recyclable. In 1980, Paul Mitchell became the first professional beauty company to publicly oppose animal testing. Now, 40 years later, that pledge remains a driving force in everything they do. In addition to being cruelty-free, most of their care, colour and styling products are vegan. With a commitment to making 10 out of the 12 product lines 100% vegan by 2023. In 1983, their co-founders established a self-sustaining solar-powered, organic awapuhi farm in Hawaii – all the awapuhi used in their products is still harvested there today.
Paul Mitchell Clean Beauty products are manufactured with 100% certified clean energy from renewable sources produced by hydroelectric power plants. Clean energy helps reduce pollution and greenhouse gases. Their global distribution HQ in California is solar-powered which provides 90% of the energy needed to run the building during working hours, keeping 337 metric tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere annually. To add to this, Tea Tree has planted one million trees and has made a commitment to plant one million more trees by the end of 2025 in places where reforestation is needed the most. By doing this another, 150,000 metric tons of CO2 will be removed from the atmosphere during their lifetime.
Paul Mitchell is proud to partner with Homeboy Industries to responsibly recycle 100% of hair tools returned to JPMS, keeping 5.6 tons of old tools out of landfills each year. In the UK, Paul Mitchell is partnered with Green Salon Collective, an organisation that provides sustainable waste management by sending daily by-products like hair colour, used foils and hair clipping for eco-friendly recycling. By doing this salons can prevent up to 95% of beauty waste from ending up in a landfill. On top of this, all Paul Mitchell Professional Hair Colour tubes are made with up to 45% recycled aluminium and are 100% recyclable.
