Twenty years ago, the preparation for prom would consist of teenage girls popping in the bendy heated curlers to create tight, springy corkscrew ringlets that would be pinned to the back of the head, while the front section of the hair would be slicked down with gel. The look would be completed with a sweeping of blue eyeshadow and lip-liner – just to the line of the lips of course. Add a satin dress with a white kitten heel and you’re good to go.
Today it’s a different story; proms have become mini wedding rehearsals for teen girls everywhere. Getting the perfect prom selfie (Prelfie anyone?) means calling in the professionals – that’s you! Prom is a great way to maximise profits and a quick way to expand your online presence – get tagged in those Prelfies! If you’re a prom client newbie we’ve put together a guide of the teen-loving trends…

A smokey eye is guaranteed to create drama, which is perfect for girls with an edge. Eyeliner is the quickest way to create a smokey eye. Apply Lord & Berry’s Silk Kajal Black which offers an intense pigment to the top and bottom lash lines. Then use a blending brush lightly smudge the line at the outer corners. Sweep a light silver-grey shade over the lids creating an arch shape. Apply a darker charcoal shade to the middle of the lid blending upwards and outwards. Finish with a touch of silver to the inner corners to make the eyes pop and sparkle all night.
Carry the drama through to the pout by steering clear of girl-next-door pinks and opting for a deep, gothic shade like Lord & Berry’s Vogue Lipstic Black Red.
Girl next door
Nothing says girl-next-door better than a ballerina bun just like American sweetheart Bella Thorne. This season is all about undone buns, seen at Ashish SS15 shows. To recreate Bella’s undone ballerina bun, put the hair into a ponytail at the crown of the head. Take a Wildest Dream Bun Ring – Blonde (to give the bun a volume boost) and pull the pony through so the bun ring is resting on the head. Spread the ponytail around the ring, tucking under and pinning as you go. If your client has a fringe, part this in the middle to instantly update the look, and lightly curl the ends. If your client has a fringe, part this in the middle to instantly update the look, and lightly curl the ends. If your client doesn’t have a fringe, use the end of a S Professional Hard Rubber Pin Comb and pull out a half-inch sections of hair to frame the face.
Peach is the new pink for Prom
With girly teen clients, keep the make up fresh, light with peach shades just like Kendall Jenner, showing us just how to rock a peach pout for a night out. Lord & Berry’s Intensity Lipstick Peach Gleam is the perfect product to nail the trend.
Take the coral theme up to the cheeks and eyes to keep the look simple yet sophisticated. Blend Lord & Berry’s Blush in 8212 on the cheekbones and team with peachy bronze peepers.
The seventies are making a comeback this season, so be prepared for plenty of boho beauties turning up at the salon doors. It’s not just beauty that’s having a throwback, this season’s fashion is inspired by the flower power decade, so expect prom clients to be wearing Woodstock-esque frocks. Millie Mackintosh nailed the boho trend in Coachella with her loose waves and flower crown. Achieve relaxed tousled waves in seconds by using BaByliss Pro Perfect Curl Black, on the middle setting (depending on the curling capabilities of your client’s hair). Bohemian locks look best without layers of product, so just lightly spray the waves with TIGI Pro Look Set Hairspray.
Festival favourites can be used for a modern prom look
The make-up for the seventies trend is very subtle and understated, which is perfect for fresh-skinned teens. Actress Sarah Hyland embraced the minimal make-up look at Coachella to complete her laid back style. Enhance your client’s natural, radiant complexion with Cream Foundation 8623. Bring out the brows with 24hr Brow Powder Compact Dark Brown and team with a smokey eye. As it’s prom, the muted make-up trend should have a twist of glamour, so add a few Diamond Crystal Gems 1440 Nail Art Pack just above the cheekbones.
Finish with a slick of neutral lippy like Lord & Berry’s 20100 Lipstick Naturelle. To go extreme-boho for brave clients, stick NUP Foil Stickers Circle Lines around the arms to create seventies style bangles.
