The (freezing) red carpet at last night’s BAFTAs soon warmed up after Hollywood’s hottest glam squad graced it with their jewelled gowns (we’re still drooling over Cate Blanchett’s Alexander McQueen blinging frock), not forgetting the boys in some seriously sharp suits (world’s best dresser Eddie Redmayne did not disappoint). But it wasn’t just the fashion (or Leo) that caught our eye – we scoured every starlet’s style to bring you the best hair and make-up looks of the evening (with a little help from Charles Worthington.) We also put together a mini step-by-step hair and makeup tutorial for each selected look so that you can make your clients look like celebrities! The winners are…
WINNER: Rooney Mara
Charles Worthington explains where the idea for his BAFTA braided chignon originated. “The inspiration came from a Bottega Veneta bag with the braids almost looking like a basket. This look was super-intricate with delicate detail.”
Step one: Apply a blow-dry primer to wet hair. Step two: Pull hair back into a ponytail at the nape of the neck. Step three: Divide the ponytail into 12 sections and braid each one, securing the ends. Step four: Braid all 12 braids together and take the end, wrapping it around the ponytail elastic. Step five: Secure with grips, making sure the chignon looks remarkably like a piece of woven leather. Step six: Attach a metallic hairband and spray with hair spray to hide any flyaways.
Rooney’s bold brows are totally on trend and create a striking make-up look that complements an equally bold hairstyle. Try Salon Services Professional Palette to add some oomph. Finish with a slick of Lord & Berry’s Vogue Lipstick in Red Carpet.
Runner up: Alicia Vikander
Windy nights plus long flowing hair equals one hot mess, unless you follow Alicia Vikander’s style sense and sweep the hair to one side for more control. Creating a loose wave, using BaByliss PRO 32mm Curling Tong, will add weight to hair.
Dakota Johnson opted for a bob last year, but this month we’ve spotted her out and about with some incredibly natural-looking extensions, which allow clients who have gone for the chop to play around with their style. Try Balmain Human Hair Extension Straight Plusbond. Encourage a long Françoise Hardy-inspired fringe like Dakota’s to soften features and frame the face.
TV presenter Laura Whitmore whipped her golden locks into a messy bun with a side order of braids. This style is simple to copy – create a braid on either side of the head, pull all of the hair into a low bun, and finish with a dramatic loose wave at the front of the head. To reach Laura’s (exceedingly) high levels of hair gloss, try Schwarzkopf Professional Bonacure Smooth Shine Treatment and finish with Osis Soft Glam Hairspray.
Laura’s piercing blue eyes were enhanced with black eyeliner applied just to the outer corners, and smudged for a softer finish. A copper eye shadow added romantic glamour as opposed to rock-chick charcoal shades. With a focus on the eyes (and that eye-popping turquoise gown), Laura opted for a neutral berry pout. Try Lord & Berry’s 20100 Lipstick in Blush.
